Our Story

Windigo Community Development Corporation was founded in October 1994 with a clear purpose: to create long-term economic opportunities for its First Nations ownership communities. As major industrial development began to expand into traditional territories — including the opening of Musselwhite Mine — it became clear that Indigenous communities needed a business entity that could actively participate in and benefit from the economic activity on their land.

Windigo was created to do just that.

Starting with the formation of Windigo Property in 1996, and soon after launching Windigo Catering, the organization began building the business arm that would serve as an engine for employment, training, and economic development. Over time, this effort evolved into a diversified portfolio of successful ventures serving both First Nations and broader industries across the North.

Today, Windigo is 100% owned by five First Nations Communities:
Bearskin Lake, Cat Lake, North Caribou Lake, Sachigo Lake, and Slate Falls Nation. The organization is guided by decades of strong direction from its communities and leaders, most notably our dedicated and visionary CEO, whose leadership has been instrumental in shaping its growth and long-term vision.

What began as a solution to a local opportunity has grown into a powerful Indigenous-owned business group. WCDC is generating revenue, creating jobs, and ensuring that prosperity flows directly back to the communities that own it.
